Hartford, Connecticut – Real Art Ways announces its annual open call for emerging artists who live and work in New England, New York or New Jersey.  Up to six artists will receive an exhibition at Real Art Ways, an exhibition publication, and an opportunity to participate in an artist talk. Submissions must be postmarked by Friday, June 4, 2010. For more information and submission guidelines, contact Real Art Ways: www.realartways.org or 860.232.1006.

Providing support and exposure to emerging artists is central to Real Arts Ways' mission. The Step Up exhibition series seeks to provide emerging artists in our region an exhibition and publication opportunity at a critical moment in their careers. Eligible artists are those living and working in New England, New York or New Jersey who are no more than three years removed from a full-time educational program, or artists with less than five years of exhibition experience.

Artists who do not fit these criteria, but feel that they can make a compelling case to be considered for Step Up 2010, may still apply.  The jury will determine their competitiveness on a case-by-case basis.  Artists working in all media are welcome to apply.  Applicants should be aware of Real Art Ways’ mission and commitment to innovative, non-traditional contemporary work.

The jury will select work based on the following: the quality of the artist’s work, the innovation evidenced by the submitted work and proposal, the potential impact of the exhibition on the artist’s career and the economic and physical feasibility of the proposed exhibition.

Although artists are permitted to propose an exhibition of existing work, the jury will place special emphasis on proposals that call for the creation of new work.

Selections from the submitted slides, videos, and electronic media that are not chosen by the jury for exhibition will be considered for inclusion in a presentation called Slide Slam.

This year’s jurors are:

  • Nato Thompson (Chief Curator, Creative Times, New York),

  • Barkley Hendricks (Artist and Professor of Art, Connecticut College, Connecticut),

  • Nick Capasso (Curator, DeCordova Museum and Sculpture Park, Massachusetts).
