Drawing from an eclectic musical background that encompasses traditional rhythms and styles from Brazil, this group is inspired by its familiarity with a fresh jazz vocabulary, and gains new vitality when performing through a contemporary lens that allows for an organic and improvisational approach. A further confirmation of Rogerio Boccato’s inventive vision can be seen in the incorporation of another element in this concert, a visual atmosphere created by artist Daniel Boccato in order to craft a two-way dialogue between art and music.
Rogerio Boccato is currently a faculty member of the Percussion Department of The Hartt School of Music. Recently relocated from Sao Paulo to New York, Rogerio is featured on percussion on Kenny Garrett’s 2007 Grammy-nominated album "Beyond The Wall" and on John Patitucci's "Remembrance.”
Saxophonist Kris Allen, a West Hartford native, studied with Jackie McLean at the Artists Collective and the University of Hartford. He has performed with Illinois Jacquet, Gerald Wilson, and Curtis Fuller, as well as with Winard Harper, Andy Laverne, Mario Pavone and the Mingus Dynasty.
Born in Montevideo, Uruguay, Nando Michelin came to Boston to study at Berklee College of Music. His discography includes "Facing South" "Common Grounds" for Brownstone, "Art" "Chants" "Live at the AJC" and "When Einstein dreams" for Double Time, and "Duende," featuring Esperanza Spalding, for Fresh Sound.
Daniel Boccato worked with Estúdio Elétrico, a top animation studio in São Paulo, Brazil, on the feature film "Garoto Cósmico" ("Cosmic Boy"). His short animated film "O Dia da Caça" ("Hunted") was shown in the Anima Mundi 2005, the most important animation festival of Latin America, and later received an award from the animation festival VisionFest.
