Hartford, Connecticut – Real Art Ways presents an exhibition of Dancehall street posters from the collection of Jamaican TV and film producer Maxine Walters. The exhibition, which is part of Rockstone and Bootheel: Contemporary West Indian Art, opens on Thursday, December 17, with a reception from 6-10 PM, during Creative Cocktail Hour. Admission is $10/$5 for members. Real Art Ways is located at 56 Arbor Street in Hartford's Parkville neighborhood. For information, contact Real Art Ways: 860.232.1006 or realartways.org.

Maxine Walters' collection, spanning the last nine years, makes its US debut at Real Art Ways, having previously been shown at the Havana Biennial.

The opening reception will feature Dancehall music from New York-based DJ Kingston19.

Maxine Walters explains the collection: "These bold and colourful signs are usually painted or stenciled on hardboard, sometimes with drawings and always with catchy phrasing... They were first used to promote Dancehall street parties but are now widely used to promote other events such as gospel concerts and local plays. The signs are erected on various poles across the community."

About Maxine Walters: Maxine Walters began working in the film industry in 1988. She has worked in production for Warner Bros., Walt Disney Studios, Fox 20th Century Studios, and as a voice coach for Denzel Washington in The Mighty Quinn. Additionally, Walters has worked with fashion photographers and on television specials with production powerhouses out of Europe and North America.
