Hartford, Connecticut – Real Art Ways presents two performances of Scott Turner Schofield’s Becoming a Man in 127 EASY Steps. Schofield uses multimedia storytelling, acrobatics, and audience participation to reveal just a few of the 127 stories from the life of a guy who just happens to have been born a girl. Becoming a Man in 127 EASY Steps is on Friday, September 18 and Saturday, September 19 at 8 PM. Advance tickets are $12/$9 for Real Art Ways members. Admission at the door is $15/$12 for Real Art Ways members.
The performances are part of Schofield’s week-long residency at Real Art Ways, during which he will lead a series of workshops and group activities. About Becoming a Man in 127 Easy Steps
Irreverent and dynamic, graceful and playful, this one-person show engages the deep questions (and the locker room jokes) about what it means to become a man. Schofield's stories explore the drama and hilarity of living a new life in the "opposite" gender.
The show's "Choose Your Own Adventure" format invites viewers to decide – live – which stories they will hear during each performance. Of course, you can't have all 127 stories in one night, and you never know what a performance artist might reveal...
The aerial dance component of the show brings a dynamism that pushes the boundaries of traditional storytelling and solo performance. Suspended at center stage by a 16' length of blood red fabric, Schofield dances, climbs, hides, and seeks in a delicate choreography of brute strength and beautiful flexibility.
Residency: Sunday, September 13 – Sunday, September 20
Schofield will lead a series of workshops during a week-long residency preceding his performances of 127 Easy Steps. Workshop information, dates, topics, and times will be announced at realartways.org later in August.
About the Artist
Scott Turner Schofield grew up as KT Kilborn, a former debutante and homecoming queen coming out in the Deep South. Kilborn's social, medical, and legal transition to Scott Turner Schofield began in 2004, when he simultaneously became a full-time performance artist. Schofield has lead lectures and workshops in environments ranging from the corporate to the collegiate and has won several awards for his performance work. His major work includes the performance pieces Underground Transit, Debutante Balls, and Becoming a Man in 127 Easy Steps; and his book Two Truths and a Lie.
The critics say:
“By turns fiercely comic, brutally honest and deeply moving, [Becoming a Man] is beautifully written, choreographed and performed… ‘Becoming a Man’ is raw, urgent and honest. Much to his credit, Schofield comes across more as a loveable neighborhood kid bursting with energy and insight then an agenda-waving political zealot. Bottom line: [Becoming a Man in 127 EASY Steps is] one of the year's most essential theater experiences.”
