Marco Benevento Trio: In Concert

Friday, November 7, 2008

Hartford, Connecticut -- Real Art Ways presents the Marco Benevento Trio in concert on Friday, November 7th at 8 pm.  Benevento will play with Reed Mathis (Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey) and Andrew Barr (The Slip) in the Real Art Ways theater. Tickets are $15, $12 for Real Art Ways members.  Tickets are available at realartways.org or by calling 860.232.1006 x 222.  Real Art Ways is located at 56 Arbor Street in Hartford’s Parkville neighborhood.

The Real Art Ways concert kicks off the Benevento Trio’s northeast tour, featuring songs from Benevento’s trio album, Invisible Baby. In Invisible Baby, Benevento’s jazz-influenced jams are acoustically centered on his piano, but Benevento is well-known for using unconventional sounds in his compositions: he’s used everything from a pump organ to a Speak N Spell.  The trio brings together three musicians with fearless improvisational chops who push the boundaries of post-jazz experimentation.

Benevento talks about his inspiration for the Trio’s sound:
When I came to NYC in 2001, my plan was to make a trio record. I studied with Joanne Brackeen, Kenny Werner and Brad Mehldau. I hung with Mehldau and listened to Largo unmixed and mastered at his house in 2001 while I was studying with him. I played two to three gigs a day in NYC, did the jam sessions and played with some incredible NYC musicians. For me this album fulfills something that I’ve wanted to do since I moved here.

Praise for Benevento from Bret Gladstone, Village Voice:
Benevento is actually a pop formalist, albeit a sneaky one, and for all his improvisational chops, a textural minimalist very much in the tradition of Brian Eno or Sigur Ros. Chaos and chance are the calling cards, but his songs are always accessible.

Samples of Benevento’s work, including Trio compositions, can be found at his official website: www.marcobenevento.com
