Opening reception Saturday, May 12, 6-9pm

Hartford, CT: – Real Art Ways presents 4 Solo Exhibitions by multidisciplinary artist Shaun Leonardo, painter Fay Ku, and installation artists Nadya Volicer and Jillian Conrad, opening Saturday, May 12, from 6-9pm, running through Sunday, July 1, 2007.

SHAUN LEONARDO
El Conquistador vs. The Invisible Man is a wrestling event in
which Shaun Leonardo portrays a Mexican wrestling luchador in
order to fight invisibility—metaphorically and literally. Shaun
will be doing a special performance scheduled for opening night,
Saturday May 12th with a rain date of May 17th. (image top left)

FAY KU
Ku’s narrative and figurative work deals with issues of socialization and the “un-thought known:” the stuff of memory, myth, and imagination. Large East Asian-inspired screen prints, depicting large-scale historic battles, employs mythic imagery to examine current political events, and man’s “innate” capacity for destruction.

NADYA VOLICER
Volicer is interested both visually and conceptually in piecing together many small parts to make up a whole. Whether through a multi-colored mosaic surface, or a cluster of lacey paper cutouts, she works towards a visual vibrancy that imparts upon the viewer a feeling of energy; chaos and harmony. Themes of home, memory, movement and architecture run throughout her work.

JILLIAN CONRAD
Conrad uses sculpture as a tool for creating connections between the ordinary stuff of everyday life and the singularity of human experience. By juxtaposing dull and reflective materials, light is employed to transform the opaque into spaces that are luminous and other-worldly, drawing the viewer into both the familiarity and friction between the inner and outer worlds we inhabit.

Shaun Leonardo, Fay Ku, Nadya Volicer and Jillian Conrad are four of six selected artists from our 2006 open call, Open, an exhibition series featuring six emerging artists from New York and New England.
