SILENT FILMS featuring LIVE MUSIC
with ALLOY ORCHESTRA

SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 13, 2005

2:30PM: Family Program, Harold Lloyd’s Speedy
7:00PM: Adult Program, Phantom of the Opera

Hartford, CT: October 21, 2005 — On Sunday, November 13, 2005, Real Art Ways presents Alloy Orchestra. The group will accompany two silent films, one geared towards families, Harold Lloyd’s Speedy at 2:30pm, and one towards adults, Phantom of the Opera at 7pm.

Roger Ebert hails Alloy Orchestra as “the best in the world at accompanying silent films.” Alloy Orchestra will delight audiences with their musical flair for enhancing these two different silent classics. Having twelve years of experience, the orchestra has performed at places as disparate as The Telluride Film Festival and The Louvre. Featuring a raw assemblage of unlikely instruments, the orchestra is comprised of three men who manage to scrape and flay outstanding accompaniments to many of the finest silent films. Group members include Roger C. Miller (of post-punk band Mission of Burma fame) on synthesizer, Ken Winokur on junk percussion and clarinet, and Terry Donahue on junk percussion, accordion, saw, and banjo.

FAMILY PROGRAM—More popular than Chaplin and Keaton by the end of the silent film era, actor Harold Lloyd soon became an instant favorite of the movie-going crowds of the time. Featuring a cameo by Babe Ruth, the film, shot in New York, witnesses Lloyd attempting to rescue the single remaining horse-drawn trolley, conducted by his girlfriend’s grandfather. Bringing hilarity to the screen, Lloyd’s timeless film Speedy is sure to have your kids laughing until their sides hurt.

ADULT PROGRAM—In one of the scariest and most influential horror movies of all time, Lon Chaney continues to amaze audiences with his performance. Now combined with the hauntingly resonant music of Alloy Orchestra, Phantom of the Opera will astonish viewers like never before due to this added aural effect. With this live soundtrack, this film will be as frightening today as it was in theaters 75 years ago.

For Speedy, admission is $12/ $10 for Real Art Ways members; Kids under 12 is $5/ $3 for Real Art Ways members. Admission for Phantom of the Opera is $15/ $10 for Real Art Ways members.
