THREE NEW SOLO EXHIBITIONS

SATURDAY, JANUARY 24, 6-8PM

 SARAH EMERSON
MARCI MACGUFFIE
 JANE PHILBRICK

HARTFORD, CT – Three solo exhibitions open in Real Art Ways' Main Gallery on Saturday, January 24 from 6-8pm featuring work by Sarah Emerson, Marci MacGuffie and Jane Philbrick. The opening is free and open to the public.

For more information visit http://www.realartways.org or call 860.232.1006.

SARAH EMERSON

Sarah Emerson's paintings in taffy colors present the natural world in all its majesty. Yet, neither the color nor the compression of imagery into a flat surface can completely camouflage the threat of violence. The deer that often traverse Emerson's landscapes recede into the pinks and purple of their surroundings in a way that first obscures but then angrily reveals their bloodshed.

Emerson is one of six artists chosen for Real Art Ways' emerging artist series Don't Trust Anyone Over Thirty. She currently resides in Brooklyn, NY.

MARCI MacGUFFIE

Marci MacGuffie's installations question the absurd means of educating the public about the natural world. MacGuffie's interest lies in the contradiction between nature and the way in which culture mediates our experience of it. Interactive elements like magnets liberate her site-specific installations from their static state.

MacGuffie is one of six artists chosen for Real Art Ways' emerging artist series Don't Trust Anyone Over Thirty. She currently resides in Brooklyn, NY.

JANE PHILBRICK

Philbrick's multimedia sound and sculpture work engages the viewer physically, spiritually, and, at times, in unsettling ways. She raises questions about how a viewer's body experiences sound.

Her video projects "Re-Spoken" and "Voix/e" were developed in residencies with the Center for Spoken Language Understanding at the Oregon Graduate Institute and The Portland Institute for Contemporary Art. She currently resides in Redding, CT.
