HOT WATER: A Design Competition
Opening Thursday, March 18, 6-8pm in the Real Room
The
Opportunity:
Real Art Ways, located in Hartford, the capital of the State of Connecticut,
announces a down and dirty design competition, open to artists, designers,
architects and the general public.
Participants are invited to submit proposals, in any media, for the
design of:
An "Official" Connecticut State Hot Tub (with Accessories)
Winners
of the competition will receive awards, as stated below.
Eligibility:
All work in all media is eligible. Drawings, cartoons, videos, computer
models, working models, photographs, multi-media are all fine. (The
exhibition space is limited, so modest-sized entries may have an advantage.
) Real
Art Ways reserves the right to disallow oversized or unsafe entries.
Conflict of Interest:
All Real Art Ways Members, Staff, Board and Contributors and their
friends and families, can and will be given special consideration in
the judging
process.
Criteria:
While entries with a sense of humor will be especially welcome, the
specific criteria for judging the competition will not be disclosed
to the general
public unless formally requested by the Attorney General.

Mail to or drop your submission off at Real Art Ways by the deadline.

Include in your submission:
• Name, address, phone number, email;
• Return packaging and postage if mailing in work;
• Special installation instructions, if needed.
Deadline:
All submissions must be received at Real Art Ways by Monday March 15.
No exceptions. (Exceptions may be made for Real Art Ways contributors.)
Drop-Off & Pickup
Times:
Entries may be dropped off Monday March 15 from 2-7pm
Work must be picked up Monday March 29, from 2-7pm. No exceptions.
(Exceptions may be made for Real Art Ways contributors.)
Jury:
The jury for the competition will be announced at a later date.
Suggested
jurors include:
Real Art Ways' Board Presdent's twin brother, Real Art
Ways' Director's wife, esthetic and unathletic siblings of Lady
Huskies, Robert A. M. Stern's favorite nephew, Michael Graves' college
roommate, Maya Lin's second cousin, and the dissolute sons
and daughters of Real Art Ways' contributors. Potential
jurors should consider the benefit of making a contribution to
Real
Art Ways. (Actual
jurors will be announced closer to March 18.)
Note to Applicants:
Applicants should let their imaginations flow, while taking into
consideration the stress of working for the state, the importance
of the hot tub
in upper level decision-making, and the savings to the state
involved in
installing an official hot tub, which can be used by multiple
administrations. Applicants are encouraged to include proposals
for a full line
of hot tub accessories, however defined.
Prizes:
First Prize:
The competition winner will be able to select a business associate,
friend or family member for a no-show summer job at Real Art
Ways. No interview,
application, references, qualifications or actual work will be
required.
Second Prize:
$100, paid in cash, paid directly from Real Art Ways' rapidly
decreasing Connecticut Commission on the Arts funding.
Third Prize:
$50, paid in cash, paid directly from Real Art Ways' ever
more rapidly decreasing Connecticut Commission on the Arts funding.
Jurying,
Exhibiting, and Partying:
Work will be presented to the public,
and the jurying process
will take place, as part of Real Art Ways' Creative Cocktail
Hour, the third Thursday of March - Thursday, March 18, 2004
- from 6-8pm, in Real Art
Ways' Real Room. Complete with Real Hot Tub, Real Cocktails
and Real Live Music.
Suggested program includes WDRC's Brad Davis starring
as "MC
Brad," a poetry reading by Hartford Courant political reporter
Jon Lender, all with bongo accompaniment by NBC30's Tom
Monahan.
The Creative Cocktail Hour: Making Connecticut safe for
hot tub lovers one martini at a time.
