Join us on Thursday, January 10, at 6 pm for a casual and intimate conversation between Director of Visual Arts Kristina Newman-Scott and Caleb Portfolio. Hear about his journey as an artist, the processes he engages, and how he makes his "fotographs."
Artist Statement:
"I’ve always been fascinated with the fotographic process and so enthralled by the idea of capturing an image, that I have become irritated at the fact that I wasn’t who invented it. I have become so irritated that I can’t bring myself to take a straightforward shot anymore. I don’t even spell fotography correctly. Instead of following the usual set of “photographic rules”, I make mine up as I go along. I experiment with alternative concepts and processes, purposefully shunning any idea of traditional photography. For this series I have developed a process and camera modification that allow me to expose film and it is being rewound. Instead of producing 24-36 separate images from a roll of film, I print one very long image. The still film camera is used almost like a movie camera, and movement and expression are captured in a fluid blur."
