Artist Statement:

I am interested in the way that we interact with architectural space and the degree to which our physical surroundings can manipulate our perceptions of ourselves. The size of a room, the height of a door, the elevation of a space, all have the potential to undermine the images we have of our physical selves. In my work, I make architectural changes to existing spaces, inviting my viewers to consider the complex dynamics of body and space.

My current body of work entitled Malleable Spaces includes several works (Expandable Room, Contractible Room and Untitled (hinged wall)) that invite participants to push and pull movable walls. As participants work to rearrange the architecture of the space, they begin to actively contribute to those outer circumstances by which they unconsciously define themselves.

About the Artist:

Asuka Goto's work explores the relationship between the human body and constructed space. Through participatory installations that often involve movable architectural elements, she invites viewers to reshape the space that surrounds them.

Goto receive an MFA in Sculpture from Tyler School of Art and a BA and Post-Baccalaureate Certificate from Brandeis University. She has participated in residencies at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, the Vermont Studio Center, the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council and HomeBase Berlin. She is the recipient of several awards including a Joan Mitchell MFA Grant and a Pennsylvania Council on the Arts Individual Creative Artist Fellowship.

Goto grew up in Boston, MA and Yokosuka, Japan and currently lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.
