Yohimbe Brothers
february 21, 2008
The Yohimbe Brothers are Vernon Reid (guitars/laptop/effects/vocals), DJ Logic (turntables and effects), Maya Azucena (vocals), Leon Gruenbaum (keys and vocals), Jared Michael Nickerson (bass), and Dantony Parks (drums). Their sound is unique, vibrant, uncategorizable, and utterly new. The concert costs $5 for Real Art Ways members and $10 for the general public. It is part of Real Art Ways' monthly visual arts opening and live arts events, dubbed Creative Cocktail Hours.
Formed in 2002 by Vernon Reid (of Living Color) and DJ Logic, the Yohimbe Brothers offer a fertile collaborative sound that traverses the borders of hip-hop, reggae, jazz, electronica, and spoken word. Their music is at once progressive and grounded in several musical traditions.
As music critic Mark F. Turner of All About Jazz has suggested, The Yohimbe Brothers offer "a distinct vibe that moves and grooves as Reid brings an array of guitar styles from head-banger riffs to subtle jazz chords, while Logic scratches, samples, and mixes sounds impressively with an unobtrusive mastery that colors the music like splashed paint on a vivid canvas."
The band offers more than just an exciting sound, though. Their lyrics are infused with a well-honed political consciousness that takes on politicians, television, pop culture, and inner-city life.
