Steve Lehman

Steve Lehman

Named a Rising Star on the alto saxophone in 2006 and 2007 by the Downbeat Magazine International Critics Poll, Lehman's work is courageous and inventive. He was a student of Jackie McLean while studying at Wesleyan University and has since gone on to perform and record throughout the United States and Europe. He has worked with such artists as Anthony Braxton, Dave Burrell, Mark Dresser, Vijay Iyer, Oliver Lake, and Meshell Ndegeocello.

Lehman's recent electro-acoustic music has focused on the development of computer-driven models for improvisation. Incorporating detailed programming and real-time processing, Lehman creates work that exhibits what David Adler of Philadelphia Weekly has called "the most advanced compositional thinking in jazz today."

According to Phil DiPietro (All About Jazz), Lehman's performances "make the ungrooveable groove - and groove hard."

Currently a doctoral candidate in Music Composition at Columbia University, Lehman has taught and lectured at Wesleyan University, the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris, the New School, Columbia University, and the School for Improvisational Music.
