Infrared Band

Fewell-Hofbauer

The Infrared Band and the Fewell-Hofbauer Duo

Two innovative bands with new CDs from Creative Nation Music, both featuring Boston-based jazz guitarist/composer Eric Hofbauer.

Eric Hofbauer on the Infrared Band:
"If there's a single overarching ethos to the band it would be 'tell your story,'...All my compositions have a back story or theme and I encourage each player to add their own take on those stories and to play from personal experience. When I decided to put together a permanent lineup for the band, I handpicked tenor saxophonist Kelly Roberge (who, like me, studied at Oberlin with Don Walden), bassist Michael Montgomery (who was recommended by a mutual friend) and drummer Miki Matsuki (who I worked with in Charlie Kohlhase's band). There's no role playing, I compose to each of their strengths, featuring everyone and challenging their limits."

About the Fewell-Hofbauer Duo:
Boston-based guitarists Garrison Fewell and Eric Hofbauer perform an eclectic series of duets inspired by the deeper roots of jazz in the music of West Africa, Persia and the Arabic-Islamic world. The music of this intergenerational duo, which met for nearly a year and a half to discuss the music before playing a single note together, juxtaposes ancient traditions with the language and techniques of contemporary improvisation.
