Handsome Family

The Handsome Family

We are pleased to present indie duo The Handsome Family. Described as "haunting, primal and strangely heroic," the original narrative-based songs of The Handsome Family are Americana in the truest sense.

The Handsome Family has been chosen by Wilco and will be playing at this year's Mass MoCA Solid Sound Festival June 24-26. Their songs have been covered by many artists, including Andrew Bird, Christy Moore, Jeff Tweedy and Cerys Matthews.

The duo has a reputation for being conversational and funny on stage, and our 150-seat theater will provide a comfortable, intimate and acoustically superb venue to enjoy their songs.

Formed in 1993 by husband-wife duo Brett and Rennie Sparks, The Handsome Family's songs are full of an awed sense of emotion in the face of nature's mysterious beauty. The Handsome Family released their eighth studio album, Honey Moon, in 2009. In 2010, the band released Scattered, a collection of lost demos, orphaned songs and odd covers that includes material culled from their entire career.

Some praise for the Handsome Family:

"Words that in their everyday surrealism have no parallel in contemporary writing...Music that mines the deep veins of fatalism in the Appalachian voice" - Greil Marcus

"As songwriters it's the eerie, ancestral voice of 'Anonymous' they ultimately resemble the most" - The Chicago Reader

"Dark, elemental, mischievous and mournful" - Mojo

"Each song is like an abridged Flannery O'Connor story read aloud by Johnny Cash, hovering somewhere between the metaphysical and the mundane." - NME
