Criminal Intent:
Rhymes with Opera & The West End String Quartet

Rhymes With Opera, a Baltimore collective dedicated to performing new opera, joins Hartford's own West End String Quartet to present Criminal Intent, a program of contemporary opera works, at Real Art Ways.

The program features composer David Smooke's "Criminal Element," written specifically for Rhymes With Opera and the West End String Quartet. "Criminal Element" is a journey through the mind of the French rogue trader Jerome Kerviel, who nearly brought down the entire European financial system in 2008. The composer describes the new opera as a "quote from Kerviel."

Rhymes With Opera and the West End String Quartet will also perform short operas by composers Ryan Jesperson (Hartford) and George Lam (Boston). Lam's opera "Someone Anyone" follows a prostitute held hostage by her client, and Jesperson's "Orphée Redux" re-imagines the Orpheus myth in 1980s New York.

In addition, the West End String quartet will perform an opening set including works by Kyle Gann, Alfred Schnittke and Ruby Fulton.
