With the open heart and clear eyes of an exile, Waldemar Bastos writes songs that beautifully entwine elements of African guitar pop — from Zaire to South Africa — with Brazilian and Portuguese influences.
On his latest CD, Pretaluz [Black Light] on Luaka Bop / Warner Bros., Waldemar beautifully portrays the struggles of a country wracked by civil war. Since fleeing Angola, Waldemar has been a resident of Brazil, France, and currently Portugal, and these travels have helped bridge the gaps between these musical styles. With songs that are at once personal and political, Waldemar's music sings of peace and optimism to challenge the desperation of a war torn country.
Waldemar will be traveling with his stellar quintet, which features two guitarists, two percussionists and a bassist.
